Sub- domain and directories; how they fit into content and search

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Sub- domain vs. Sub- directory; the argument has been brewing for as long as SEO has been practiced. Of course there are many a personal preference around this topic, all influenced by experience. The biggest difference between the two is that sub- directories explain what pages are about and sub- domains describe individual sites.

Sub- directory

General traits of a Sub- directory

  • Better for smaller sites
  • Builds dominance in one place over time
  • Easy to manage (less technical)
  • Basic geo- targeting
  • Considered part of the same domain by search engine
  • Beneficial to use for a blog (hosted on the same domain)
  • Numerous sub- directories can be created per domain
  • Indexed quickly by search engines
  • Organisation (arrange content into descriptive URL’s)

If quality content is missing, it is always better to use the sub- directory route. It is important to try and think like the search engine. Do not use low quality content as search engines will always generate quality results for the user. This means that should the sub- domain feature a lack of work or low quality content, it will not rank as it is suspicious content.

Sub- domains

  • Requires generous and quality information and content (different content)
  • Better for sites that are competitive in various related arenas
  • Targets different cities etc more effectively
  • Treated as separate website by search engines (including Google)
  • Able to add new niches to a domain
  • Considered a sub- extension of current domain
  • Gain benefits of website (without costs of registering  and hosting)
  • Hosted on same account as normal domain (shown in a different folder)

It is necessary to create backlinks for sub- domains, as you would for a new site. If the sub- domain becomes banned, it will in- turn, affect the main site as they are linked.

There are benefits and drawbacks to using sub- domains but in the long run and for the most part, there is nothing wrong with using them. Both of the above are useful, In fact using sub- directories on each sub- domain works well too.

Is aspx or php better for SEO?

Friday, March 25th, 2011

There is a long standing debate in the world of SEO which tries to get to grips with the myth that aspx websites will not index as well as a html or php site does. There are arguments in favour of both camps; but which one is actually right?!

What is aspx?

ASP.NET is a web application framework developed and marketed by Microsoft to allow programmers to build dynamic web sites, web applications and web services.

What is php?

PHP is a programming language used for populating dynamic web pages. It is mainly used in web development and can be embedded into HTML by using PHP code as its input and HTML as the output. PHP is also a part of the popular LAMP environment, but has many other useful applications as well.

We can already see where a lot of the problem stems from. In the aspx definition, the mother of all swear words when it comes toweb development, “Microsoft” is responsible for the aspx language. Many web developers are not firm favourites of anything Microsoft due to the expensive licencing costs as well as the business methodology of keeping all their cards close to their chest rather than following an opensource route like php.

But this really doesn’t get to the heart of the problem as there are many aspx developers out there who DO swear by the platform; so what is it about the platform that causes so many headaches for SEO professionals?

aspx vs php code wars

So what’s the answer?

Truth be told; it comes down to personal preference… Yip, that’s the answer. There is no definitive answer which points in either direction. In the old days of search, when SEO was but a babe, search engines wouldn’t (read couldn’t) crawl dynamic pages – the heart and soul of aspx. Today though, the major three (Google, Yahoo and Bing) all crawl and index dynamic pages without too much hassle.

The real lesson here is that basic SEO best practices still mean the most :

1. Ensure relevancy between your content, heading, tile and URL

2. ensure that your URL’s are clean – use a rewrite mod to change your URL

3. Ensure that you keep the 3 spheres on SEO in mind : on site; off site and server side.

To sum up in short; if you are an aspx developer; then stick with aspx. If you are a php developer, then stick with php. If you have beef with Microsoft, then so be it – truth be told though, aspx is a very powerful and beautiful language once you get to know it and understand it………. Much like Flemish!

Zoopy- giving South African’s a chance to share with the world

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

It is always exciting when something great happens in South Africa, especially when it happens on the internet. You may have already heard about the South African “YouTube” creating waves amongst the internet surfers. Zoopy is its name and it certainly has left an impression.

In 2006, Zoopy was launched into closed beta where it then moved into live beta, available to the public on 5th March 2007. With some pretty high profile users like Helen Zille, Grant Haskin and Jonathan Shapiro (Zapiro,) this online and mobile social media site has certainly been appreciated for a variety of different reasons.

▪ Share/ view videos

▪ Share/ view photos

▪ Share/ view audio clips

▪ Zoopy TV (content created by the Zoopy team)

With the character and personality of South Africans, what better way to show off our enthusiasm than offer a platform to express to the world the creative, artistic, clever, funny, talented, charismatic, colourful, glamorous, expressive side that we all have within us! (May be a little biased there) With the world cup successfully behind us, who wouldn’t want to continue seeing more from this exciting country?

How does Zoopy work?

Zoopy is fun, new and is South Africa’s first video and photo sharing social network. Why wouldn’t we need one of these considering the huge amount of talent we have on display in South Africa? Just like YouTube, Zoopy allows you to upload a variety of media, choose a channel, write a description and share with the world. Whether it’s funny or something a little more serious, even amateurs are able to contribute to Zoopy.

Once your upload is live it is able to be viewed by people all over South Africa and the rest of the world. Through using Zoopy you are also able to invite friends, family and who- ever you wish to view your media- provided they are a member of Zoopy. If however you choose to use Zoopy as you do YouTube, you are able to view videos and photos and enjoy the humor, interest and fun that others choose to share with the world.

Follow them on Twitter, subscribe to the blog or join the Zoopy Facebook page.

Talooma revealed to clients at the “Yellow Launch”

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Over the last few months, there has been much stress, panic, fun and games revolving around our “Yellow Launch.”  After sending out teaser mailers and invitations to all our clients and preparing for one of the biggest and most exciting moments in JD Internet Consulting’s history, we are proud to announce that we have refreshed and recreated our brand. The unveiling of “Talooma”, which is our new name, created much hype and excitement amongst our clients and especially the hard working staff at Talooma. Over the last few months, there has been much dedication to hard work, brain power and creativity that has gone into launching our rebranded company.

The name “Talooma” originates from the Swahili term for “professionalism.”  After much debate and research it was decided that yellow and grey would represent the new brand. The fresh, original approach is carried throughout our logo, website and within the company as a whole.

The launch, which was hosted at The Business Centre in Fourways, was a great success.  We asked all our guests to bring a yellow colored gift for the SPCA. We received an  impressive collection of donations which will be going to the SPCA in Nigel.

With almost all of our clients at the event, there was much mingling, eating and fun to partake in. The evening  begun with snacks and drinks outside and later moved indoors so that our guest speakers could reveal what the “Yellow Launch” was all about. This was long awaited as all of our clients were in the dark with regards to what the launch involved.

When our new name “Talooma” was introduced to the guests, the Talooma team threw streamers and decorations into the crowd. The banner was unveiled and Talooma was born. This very exciting moment was certainly well earned by the new Talooma team.

We at Talooma look forward to working with our clients and taking on new challenges within the world of the internet. We thank all our clients who attended the “Yellow Launch” and for all the support over the years.

Talooma’s new website is something we are all very proud of. We feel that it not only represents our rebranded company perfectly but also each one of us at Talooma. Check it out, www.talooma.com

What’s private might not be so private anymore

Facebook- the social media site that has taken the world by storm. With 1 million users in 2004 to over 400 million users in 2010, Facebook has become one of the most common ways to communicate with people not only on the other side of the world but next door too.

Despite the number of users, Facebook has recently been taking slack from many of its followers. It has slowly been increasing the amount of data that can be shared with “friends” on Facebook. Between December 2004 and April 2010, Facebook has increased the amount of items that are available for public viewing from 4 to over 8. This means that information that is put up on Facebook has gone from being available for viewing for Facebook users, to available for the world to see. Not a good thing if your mate put pictures up of that time you passed out drunk, hugging the toilet bowl.

Facebook suicide

There was recently a website formed, www.quitfacebook.com, that petitioned the privacy settings. The plan that was to follow was for Facebook users to “kill off” their social network profiles. Quit Facebook Day on the 31st May 2010 had almost 30 000 members who planned to say goodbye to the addictive site forever. They felt violated by Facebook’s privacy policy and settings. However not all of the angry users did delete their profiles.

The creator and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, and the rest of the team have nothing to worry about should more people decide to cut ties with the popular social site. Facebook is gaining a monstrous 35 000 users an hour. To break that down for you, that’s about 10 users every second, all over the world.

Privacy control on Facebook

With so many complaints about Facebook privacy settings there have been changes made to try decrease the amount of personal information and data that is available to the public. A privacy setting has been added to all content. It applies to contact details, photos and status updates. Facebookers can now decide whether or not they want to share their information with Facebook friends, friends- of- friends or everyone on the internet. Less information will be available to the public from now on and games applications on Facebook will have to ask the Facebook account holder for permission to access private information.

Over the last few months, Facebook has received harsh criticism from regulators. The European Commission and advocacy groups such as Electronic Frontier Foundation have made remarks and complaints about Facebook’s privacy settings. Facebook was accused of steering users towards sharing private information instead of keeping it private.

Mark Zuckerberg says that because so many new applications and features have been added to Facebook, it became almost impossible for users to control the privacy settings. They became complicated and difficult to use. Let’s just hope that they have overcome this hiccup and that we can continue posting those crazy weekend pics up without the rest of the world having a good laugh at us.

How long till Google indexes my site..?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Building a website within SEO best practice guidelines is the first step to getting your site crawled, indexed and ranked by major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

The important points here to remember are to :

  1. Submit your URL to the search engine (like this for Google)
  2. Ensure that your sitemap.xml has been submitted (like this)

These 2 steps ensure that the search engines know that your site is there to be crawled and searched. Once this has been done though it takes a while for the bots to get to your site and actually crawl it.

The process of getting it indexed can take anywhere from between 2 and 4 weeks; but there are a few ways that you can “speed” up this process and take you to the next level.

Ranking, the second step after indexing

Inbound links to your site act as lead ins to your site which Google and other search engines will follow to your site. As soon as they have followed the link and arrived at your site they will begin crawling; indexing and ranking it. Google enjoys finding a website through links as it already confirms popularity of the site (which is closely related to relevancy).

The ranking process is the really important one as this determines where in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) you will show up. Apart from on site optimisation techniques such as title tags, H1 tags, keyword relevancy, code, etc. it is the process of link building and marketing your site that will greatly improve where you rank.

Cementing your site rank with link building

By having your site linked to by other sites which are directly related to your site and in fact in the case of article syndication, to article directory sites that are not directly related to your site. These back links are the cement with which the page rank for your site is built and it is this page rank which ultimately determines where you show up in the SERPS.

Does your mobile site validate?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I have recently been developing mobi sites for some of our customers and after an immense number of hours researching, I have yet to find a South African mobi website that validates. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Before we go any further, let’s define the term “Validation“:

1. To declare or make legally valid.
2. To mark with an indication of official sanction.
3. To establish the soundness of; corroborate.

After some time, I managed to validate the 2 mobi websites I have been busy with and to be honest, it was somewhat of a challenge. Rules and guidelines have been laid out by the W3C to ensure (or try to ensure) that websites (including mobi sites) keep to the best standards of practice. This ensures search engines can actually crawl your webpages and it maintains universal understanding between browsers and users. For more information on understanding the phrase “Validating a website” please refer to the first half of this wordpress post.

With mobile validation, your validation score is represented by a number, with the maximum being 100 at the top of the scale, and the opposite side can go into negatives. I have taken a look into some of the most well known SA mobi sites and can say that they do not score well at all, they range between -13 and 77.

Some common errors included the following:

  • Extraneous characters (whitespaces or comments),
  • The document does not validate against XHTML Basic 1.1 or MP 1.2,
  • The Table contains less than 2 tr elements,
  • Page weight errors,
  • Embedded external resources,
  • Nested tables,
  • Cache control,
  • Incorrect character encoding,
  • Incorrect Doctypes,
  • Broken links,
  • and the list goes on…

It is imperitive to source a web design/mobi design company that complies with the W3C standards. This will ultimately save you thousands in the long-run when you decide to hire a SEO company to market your site online.

For those of you that don’t know how to validate your site, visit the W3C Mobile Validator page to try yourself, but once you have pulled enough of your hair out, consider JD Consulting.

If anyone knows of any valid mobi sites, please send me the details.

Pageload speed – A new SEO factor?

Friday, July 31st, 2009

It seems as if Google will probably be implementing pageload speed to their algorithm. Of course, this does make sense… somewhat. The quicker the page loads, the quicker you get the information, the happier you are. Right? Right. I guess this makes Google (and every other search engine) happy as well due to the fact that their bandwidth usage drops, and crawling speeds pick up making available more capacity for more information to be crawled at the end of the day. Which in turn is good for us at the end of the day

Just think about this for a minute. If there are 120billion websites (wild guess), and lets say 5% increase their speed effeciency by 0.1seconds. Thats means that 166 666 site hours have been saved. Quite a lot isnt’ it?

Google ofcourse created their own software for web developers, they wouldn’t want them using Yahoo!’s YSlow would they?

Download Googles Pageload Speed Tool to see how your site compares to the best practises.
